We got the scoop from Karen about her story and how she transitioned from Computer Programmer to working at a Spa for years, to entrepreneur opening her own SPA in 2018!

After working as a solo massage therapist and esthetician in a private office in North Park for 18 years, Karen decided it was time to expand her business and opened Firefly Wellness Day Spa.

The expansion had been a dream of Karen’s for many years and when she finally started the ball rolling on the project it took two years to finally open the doors. It has been a long journey.

The Firefly Wellness Day Spa staff includes 3 additional massage therapists, 3 additional estheticians as well as a Meditation instructor and yoga instructor.

Karen brought Rose, one of her estheticians into the studio to demo a signature facial on camera as well as to talk about the “Flavor of the month facial” they create each month for their customers.

This month is Honey and Eucalyptus and next month is Pumpkin Latte!

Karen also brought in Holly, her massage therapist to showcase their signature custom massages, and cupping on camera!

We also learn about the amazing products Karen carries in the spa, from her PCA Skincare Line to the COOLA Mineral based sunscreen and reef safe line!

All of these products can be ordered on line and shipped for free!

Congrats to Karen and the staff for their Anniversary coming up on September 22nd!

They are having an awesome event at their spa from 1-4PM with free chair massages, treats, and prizes from local businesses!

Stop in and see them!

Karen Hutchins – Owner

Karen is a true California girl. She grew up in the Bay Area and moved to San Diego in 1992. She met her husband shortly after and the rest, as they say, is history. Her and Stephen have a son, Zenden, and an adorable dog, Loki.

After attending San Diego State University, Karen worked as a computer programmer until completely switching gears in 1999. She went to school to become an esthetician and shortly after, studied massage at IPSB where she received her massage license.

Her career as an esthetician and massage therapist started out in 2000 working in various spa environments and doing house calls. She also worked closely with an acupuncturist for six years and did chair massage at the Charger games. During that time she was able to build her own clientele and since 2008 was able to sustain her solo business on her own in her private studio in North Park.

After thinking about it for several years, Karen started the process of expanding her business in 2016 and was able to open her doors in her new spa in Mission Hills in September 2018.

Karen and her family love to play board games and go camping. They also attend Comic-Con every summer.
